Billow and Blossoms
In April 2024 the cherry blossoms appeared early and we rushed out to the gardens of the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington to capture them before they were gone. When I arrived the scene that captured my attention was a tall lanky tree standing bare beside a smaller cherry tree full with blossoms. The sky behind these two characters seemed almost menacing. I imagined the tall dark tree like a guardian leaning every so slightly to protect the soft blossoms of its smaller friend.
The wind was strong. Wind is not a friend to plein air painters. I managed to complete 80% of the painting the first day but had to return as the clouds arrived with rain and strong winds. As it happens, this piece was revived in 2025. I wanted to add more vibrance to the colours and increase the drama of the scene.
The beautiful earthy palette will complement any decor and become a story-telling piece.
This original painting is 24” high and 24” wide with a depth of 1.5”. The artwork wraps halfway around the edges which are then finished in black. This provides a clean, finished, high-end look and makes the work ready to display without the need for a frame.
