Mapache
My trip to Costa Rica influenced the art to follow. It certainly wasn’t someone I anticipated. Immersing myself in the culture and language of the Tica’s I was able to experience a world that was very much unlike my own in Canada. I’ve create three works so far (as of May 2025) inspired by my trip to Costa Rica. Each one celebrates a new colour palette, light, bright and joyful. And each one discards the need for perfection, straight lines, even forms. Instead, these are meant to express the carefree and easy-going nature of the people of Costa Rica. Their friendly faces and willingness to converse with someone from a far away land.
Mapache means Racoon in Spanish. It is the name of the boat that I captured in paint on stretched watercolour paper. The humble fishing boat elevated in bold cheerful paint and expressive forms.
This original water-based ink painting is 20” high and 16” wide with a low profile depth of .75”. The artwork wraps around the edges. This provides a clean, finished, high-end look and makes the work ready to display without the need for a frame.
